Halle an der Saale: the city of Handel
Welcome to Halle an der Saale, the birthplace of Georg-Friedrich Händel and the city of Hallenser, Halloren and Hallunken - a statement that can be found in Robert Moritz' "Halloren-Geschichten". The Halloren were the workers who extracted the "white gold" in the salt city and lived on Hallmarkt, while the Hallenser were the citizens who traded in the salt in the upper town. All those who stayed in the suburbs were called Hallunken - with a wink, the term has survived to this day.
However, today Halle an der Saale is not only known for its eventful history and great personalities, but also for its unique architecture. Because the city was not extensively destroyed during the war years, there are still numerous buildings from a wide range of eras, from Baroque and Renaissance to the largest half-timbered house in Europe. And the largest carillon on the continent in the Red Tower on the market square reminds the people of Halle what time it is - with the same melody as Big Ben in London, by the way.
Halle not only describes itself as the cultural capital of Saxony-Anhalt, it also has a lot to offer when it comes to living and working. Halle is one of the cities with the highest proportion of green spaces and recreational areas and has one of the oldest scientific institutions in Germany, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. Together with nearby Leipzig, Halle forms the center of the urban economic metropolitan area of Central Germany. Alongside Merseburg and Bitterfeld, it is considered a key component of the Central German chemical triangle and is today an important location for mechanical and vehicle engineering, the chemical industry, plant construction and the construction industry.
